Teaching

I have over 5 years teaching experience. I offer lessons in Cello, Bass Guitar, Music theory, Song writing, Singing, Piano, Guitar, and Octave Mandola

My music teaching ethos is very much based around helping the student achieve their goals, and finding what makes them passionate about music. The very broad scope that I take to music means that I don’t pigeon hole people into learning things that they are not interested in. A lot of young students can be put off by the overwhelming nature of pure classical study - I bring a modern music sensibility to classical instruments that resonates with young learners. I am able to guide them through their early stages of playing, developing proper technique, hand positioning, and posture with a focus on producing the best tone. As they develop I can take them through the early grades of Trinity, ABRSM, or RockSchool if that is what they would like to focus on - these help guide their learning and track their progress, but if students prefer to focus on other things then I am also very happy to work with them to create a scheme of work that is best for them. I am very passionate about sharing the joy of music and encouraging young learners.

What People Are Saying

“I’d never learned Piano before until I started learning with Ian, and I was amazed at how quickly he helped me pick it up! Ian is a very friendly and engaging teacher and I would recommend him to anyone who wants to learn an instrument.”

— 19 year old student

“He’s amazing! My son has lessons with him. Honestly can’t recommend him enough and he’s such a lovely man.”

— Chelsea Wright, mother of student

“Since starting online lessons with Ian, I have seen major improvements in my song writing and music composition skills. As well as helping me with my instrumentation and arrangement in my songs, Ian has really helped me with music theory. Despite theory being notorious for being one of the ‘less enjoyable’ parts of learning music, he makes it both interesting to learn but also a very useful took to have for writing. Song writing has been my passion for a long time but working with Ian has made me love writing even more! He is an extremely patient and friendly teacher who really knows his stuff and clearly loves what he does, what more can you ask for?”
